The attractiveness of multifractals may to some extent be due to mystery. All mystery is eliminated , however , when one understands the nature of the formal manipulations. ' B. Mandelbrot 1 In November 1996 , the German national science foundation DFG 2 sponsored a workshop at the University of GG ottingen , entitled`Fractals and Dynamics '. This workshop concentrated on the great breadth of the theory of fractals. Special emphasis was given to the newly developing theory of multifractals. Several other related topics were represented as well ; such as fractional calculus , harmonic analysis for random walks and certain aspects of complex dynamics. The basic goal was to bring together researchers from diverse areas of the theory of fractals and in particular multifractals , to inform about new developments , and to encourage further interaction. The proceedings give elaborated abstracts of nearly all of the talks held at the workshop , ordered according to the timetable of the workshop. These notes are not refereed.
